What Is Planet X – The Scientific Definition

The idea goes back to the early 20th century. An astronomer named, Percival Lowell assumed that the discrepancy in Uranus and Neptune’s orbits was caused by the gravity of another, more distant planet. He believed there was an “unseen world” which was interfering with the gravity of these two planets. Lowell set out to search for this planet, and call it Planet X. Lowell wasn’t able to find Planet X. He passed away in 1916, ten years before Pluto was even discovered.

However, in 1930, astronomer Clyde Tombaugh set out to find a distant planet. He found Pluto in his search, and many people assumed that the long search for Planet X was over. But Pluto wasn’t big enough to have the sort of effect on Uranus and Neptune’s orbits that Lowell thought.

Later research provided another explanation. Scientists figured out that the irregularities in Uranus’s and Neptune’s orbits were mostly caused by errors in measuring Neptune’s mass. So, there was no need to search for a new planet. So, the original Planet X proposed by Lowell was not confirmed. But the idea itself did not disappear. There was always a possibility that another planet had been overlooked in the deep reaches of space.

Planet Nine — The Real Scientific Version of Planet X

Today, if a researcher is asking what is planet X, they might be referring to an additional planet which is thought to be existing in the solar system called Planet Nine. This planet was hypothesized when astronomers started finding some unusual behavior of several small objects beyond Neptune.

Mike Brown and Konstantin Batygin of the Caltech suggest that such behavior is explained by the fact that there is a giant planet, many times bigger than Earth, lurking somewhere in the solar system.  This planet would take an enormously long time to make an orbit around the sun. To put the distance into perspective, Neptune, the farthest planet from the sun, has an average orbital radius of 30 Earths, while the radius of Planet X’s orbit could be hundreds of Earths. Therefore, it would take thousands or even ten thousands of years for Planet X to make one full orbit. This extreme distance may explain why astronomers have not directly photographed it. The planet would receive very little sunlight and could appear extremely faint from Earth. Still, astronomers are currently working around the clock trying to discover Planet X. They use multiple different telescopes and methods, including wide-area surveys, to spot the planet.

The origin of this theory began in 1995 when Nancy Lieder claimed to have received messages from alleged aliens from the Zeta Reticuli star system about the imminent danger of Nibiru. Lieder stated that Nibiru is a huge rogue planet that will pass through the center of the Earth in May 2003, shifting the Earth’s poles and destroying civilization as we know it.

When the date of the supposed planetary catastrophe approached, nothing happened. Later, numerous similar stories about Planet X and the end of the world in 2012, 2017, 2020, and other years came out, and none of them were confirmed. The idea of Nibiru as a colossal planet on a collision course with Earth has since become an Internet myth. However, if a planet of such a large size approaching the earth, astronomers would surly detect it. A large planet of this size would also be easily visible when it reaches near the sun. So NASA stated multiple times that there is no evidence that proves the existence of Nibiru or a hidden planet that is currently heading toward Earth. At last, the Internet is full of myths about what is planet x, one of which is the Nibiru conspiracy.
