This comet isn’t just an ordinary it is an interstellar which means it isn’t coming from our solar system. It’s coming from another star system carrying many secrets in it.

What Interstellar Comet 3I ATLAS means?

This comet 3I/ATLAS is officially named as the third interstellar object ever discovered in earth. In its name the 3I stands for Third Interstellar and ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial Impact Last Alert System) is the name of the telescope system in Hawaii by which it is discovered.

And the term interstellar means between the Stars. So when we say an Interstellar Comet it means that it came from another Star not from our Solar System.

When and How Was 3I Atlas Discovered?

Astronomers detected this interstellar comet 3I ATLAS in July 2025, by using the ATLAS telescope system in Hawaii. This ATLAS telescope system is designed to spot dangerous comets which are near to Earth. But this time it spots some far mysterious comet. Astronomers observe from its speed and orbit that it is not the part of our solar system it came from another star system which is far away from our sun.

What makes interstellar comet 3I ATLAS so special?

In our Solar System mostly Comets revolves around the sun in oval orbit. They travel so far and then come back after many years. Like Halley’s Comet, it returns after 76 years. These comets are bound to the sun by the gravitational force.

But in the case of 3I ATLAS it is completely different from the others. It is not following oval path instead it follows hyperbolic trajectory. It means that it is not bound to any one from their gravity so it’s not going to return. It keeps flying forever like it is on one way journey through our solar system. The Interstellar Comet 3I ATLAS is truly so important because it is not from our solar system and it consist of material of another star. This helps to our scientist to get know about other solar system. So the Interstellar Comet 3I ATLAS isn’t just a Comet, it is a cosmic traveler which provide us information about the other stars.

This was the first interstellar object which we ever found in 2017. Then in 2019 the 2I/Borisov is the second interstellar object which we ever found. And now this family has the third member named 3I/ATLAS in 2025.

What Happens next?

Right now Scientist from all around the world keeping an eye on Interstellar Comet 3I ATLAS. It is moving so fast and it’ll go soon and hide into the deep space. But Scientist are already planning for next mission by which they can know quickly next time when an interstellar object shows up and learn more from it.

One example is the Comet Interceptor held by the European Space Agency, which will wait for the next visitor and ready to chase it.
