Earth Is Also Making the Moon Shake
Now, the second explanation of what causes moonquakes involves a much farther away actor: Earth itself.
Like the gravitational effect of the Moon on Earth’s oceans (causing tides), the Earth’s gravity also induces tidal stresses in the Moon’s interior. These stresses are generally not strong enough to cause significant deformation. But in specific regions deep inside the Moon, repeated tidal stresses can trigger seismic events. These are known as deep moonquakes.

Meteoroids Can Hit the Moon and Trigger Seismic Waves

Unlike the Earth, the Moon has a thin atmosphere, if you want to call it that, which means lots of small meteoroids, can crash into the Moon’s surface without slowing down.
